Default Saturday's plane pics (epic DUW)

For you plane lovers.. like me

I finally got over the learning curve of the Tamron 200-500mm lens and learned how to properly use it.
Went to SFO and found another good spot, a mile away from the planes.

At 500mm, I could see details in the cockpit, such as the pilot faces and headpieces. Not to shabby considering I was 1800 yards away

Somewhere around this time.. Airport Police K-9 Unit showed up.

This is the ACTUAL resolution of the photo above, @ 500mm

I remember seeing one for the first time when I was in the Army. They were still experimental. Awesome.

Before 9-11-01 you could park at the end of the airstrip in Orlando and watch those things right over your head. I loved that. Even had hot dog vendors there. All gone.

Cool pics. So how long till Homeland Security is knocking on your door for taking the pictures?

Well some airport police K9 unit showed up 2 hours into taking pics. No hassle though, but it was clear he was called to check me out. (I make sure i shave before i head out there). If I was close to the fence I would definitely get the boot. But where I was, is a good mile away from the fence and planes in a public park. Taking pics of planes is not illegal, yet

When I arrived there were 2 small time photographers taking pics, with very small lens. I sent them packing home when I pulled out the Tamron lens, which is about 40 inches long at 500mm, and 10 inches wide at the end.

Those were cool pictures. I forgot how big those 747's really are.

You see any military aircraft?

Nope, but in 2 weeks is the Salinas Air show. There's the AF thunderbirds, F15 and F18 demos.

In 3 weeks is fleet week and the Blue Angels. I'm realling looking forward to this one.

You bet I'll be there for both, prepare for another thread of high res pics

In flight shots would be great. With a lens like yours I would be shooting detail shots like tires smoking as the planes land and vapor trails. Then again Ive never shot with one of those lens so it might be harder than I think.

Yea unfortunately the active runway with the planes landing was a good 2 miles out, and at that distance the heat distortion made all the pics look blurry.
Also, the dew point wasn't good enough for vapor trails, I think a good time for that is early in the morning.

Looks like you did capture the 747-400 landing though, I doubt tires smoke on takeoff.

Yea, speaking of that pic, note the wind direction and speed, and look at the banked touchdown leaning left. That crosswind was blowing hard, and thats the last plane I want to be landing in that condition
