Default Operation Paul Bunyan

A few weeks ago, while having a discussion on North Korea with my Motor Sergeant, he mentioned something about a bunch of American soldiers getting killed by North Koreans while trying to cut down a tree. He mentioned it was in a book that he has back at his house, and that he'd try to bring it in for me to read. Well he forgot about the book, and I about the conversation, as we've been in the middle of a field problem for a month and we all have more important shit on our minds. Well last night, while reading about the capture of the U.S.S. Pueblo by the North Koreans I also read a passing sentence about Operation Paul Bunyan. The name sounded odd, and eerily familiar, so I Wiki'd it.

Basically in 1976 two U.S. officers, a ROK officer, and some UN soldiers went to go trim a tree that was blocking their view of a North Korean outpost. In response a bunch of North Korean soldiers jumped the boarder, butchered the two U.S. Army officers, and injured a bunch of the UN guys.

The U.S. response was classic. Just fucking classic. We moved a bunch of military forces, both U.S. Army and ROK Army, into the area where they would be quite visible. The entire peninsula was put on hight alert, forces were moved towards the boarder, and the USN carrier Midway was sent to the region. With that we then sent two groups of combat engineers, supported by infantry and a squad of ROK Special Forces soldiers up to the place where the two officers were killed, and instead of trimming the tree, the engineers basically flipped off the North and cut the bitch down.

For a more drawn out, and interesting, chronicle of the events read the Wikipedia entry.
