Transmission problem

I have a 1993 Crown Vic with 165k miles. It has started to have a problem a couple months ago. The car does not move right away sometimes when it is not warmed up. I push on the gas with it in gear and the engine revs up but the car does not move for a few seconds and then it grabs. Does this mean the transmission is going out? How long will it be before it gets real bad? Is there anything I should do?

Get a new transmission.

'93s still have the crap-tasic old trannies, though...so in all honesty it's not even really worth it to replace it for a car that old with 165k. At this point it's probably a good idea to start looking for a new ride.
