View Full Version : My new ride
This is my moms lawn mower. She has moved and doesn't have a yard anymore so I am baby sitting this thing for a long time. I told her I will probably just buy it from her later. I have always wanted a riding lawn mower. I don't have a very big yard but I will never use the push mower, unless I absolutely have to.

I was thinking more along an "arrest me red" to kinda match the soon to be owners truck. A little chrome stack up front, maybe a little flame job offa the front valance, and an umbrella for them 20 minute mow jobs-JRC

I have the same model with the V-twin 20HP motor. It's been great. I've been using and abusing it for 4 years now and never had a single issue until last Fall when a stupid $.14 C-clip broke and let the gear fall off the input shaft of the transaxle. No damage, just a few hours to fix.

I've always wanted a riding mower, or to replace our entire lawn with astroturf.
I had that exact same lawnmower, bought it used off a guy, he complained about it being hard to start. I thought it would be an easy fix, fix starter, adjust the valve lash, something simple.
Sure enough, the cam was fucked up in it. Sold the transaxle to a friend who dropped his out of the back of a truck and recouped my losses.

The Peerless-Tecumseh rear transaxle in mine would have been about $340 shipped to my home. All in all, after 4 years of abuse and neglect (I never even changed the oil :cowboy: ) i wouldn't have complained one bit if I did in fact end up replacing it.
I already told my mom and step-pa that I will be painting it if I do buy it from them. I would probably do some type of flame paint job. Black and Orange are my favorite color combo's.
The motor has been replaced once in this mower, because my step dad tried to cut really tall thick grass and it broke the crank or something. It was under warranty and they fixed it for free. The receipt of all the work said it was a total of $2500. Thats more then I put into my truck motor.
I don't know anything about lawnmowers but I figured its a craftsman so it can't be to bad.

You can buy a good commercial mower for that. I'm happy with my 21 horse Troybilt, but my next mower is going to be a Scag or a Dixie Chopper zero turn.

fixed it for ya.... craftsman or crapsman has really gone down hill from what they were... and the mower is made by MTD, mtd parts are interchangable with it, and usaully cost less, than crapsman parts...

Yep, they're not very good... we've got a 6-or-so-year old Craftsman 18hp sitting in the garage with a HUGE crack in the frame. Motor and trans were replaced under warranty, too.
Contrast to my father's '94 Deere LX176 that cost around $3900, but in 13 years and well over 1000 hours has needed nothing more than oil changes, and a couple of replacement plastic deck guide wheels.

They are in fact pretty much just throw-aways. As long as you get a decent price on one, just run it into the ground. That's all I'm doing. Someday when I have more money to throw around I'll get a nice Deere or Ariens. I think I paid about $1100 on sale brand new for my little beast.
Oh, from the mouth of the underequipped
We use one of these (ZD28F):

My Dad is the only person I've seen that can actually cut his grass nicely at 20 MPH.

The Deere does it fine at ~8mph.
Of course, the grass down here is a bit different than the grass up there... ;)

I despise cutting grass. Get an animal to eat it.

Mowing and pressure washing appeal to my OCD... making all the tall grass turn into short grass in nice, neat, straight lines, and making the dirty walls clean is fun. :look:

Goats, sheep, cows, mother-in-law, I don't care. Just don't waste energy mowing the shit.
You need one of them thar robots to do it for ya. No piles of shit and they actually cut it evenly.

You've never had to mow three times a week because the grass grows so fast, apparently...
