Yeah, them things are great, till ya gotta work on 'em
I was lead mechanic at a job order gov't subcontractor macine shop in Mass(Arch Gear in Wareham).
We had 'em all, American, German, Japan. Hobbers, millers, grinders, CNC machining centers, both horizontal and vertical.
Try working on 'em when they fuck up, try figuring out the logic path on the electronics, try "zeroing" one of them.
Okuma, Mitsu-Suki, MatSuura, Cincinnati, Mitsubishi, KZW, we had 'em all.
To "zero" 'em is to two/tenths, thats two/tenthousandths. Ya zero the machine, then ya zero all the axis. All kinds of dial indicators and electronic measuring units. Ya touch one adjustment, every other one of 'em goes outa whack.
During one of our 2nd shift runs we had a guy put a "blank" in upside down on one of our brand new , very expensive German CNC gear hobs. HOW he did that we never figured out, but he did. Set it up, "zeroed" the piece and pushed the big green "GO" button. Drove the headstock and upper gear works of the machine right outa the top of it. Shattered the hob, trashed the table, I didn't think it was possible to damage one machine so bad so fast.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED IT. If your a true "gearhead" ya LOVE working on stuff like this. Plus I made a small fortune with OT there, worked at least 60 hours a week.
But holy shit were these things a pain in the ass to work on-JRC

I can only imagine... the ancient bridgeport we had at Raytheon was a PITA as well... and it was totally mechanical... but thats what happens when a bunch of coneheads try to work on "mechanical" thingys... hehehe
